Tangram Linework (Mirrors)

For this mirror series, the primary pattern is based on a niche mathematical concept within geometry and substitution tiling known as ‘Tangram’ which was reinterpreted and redrawn by hand.

Each work consists of multiple layers of fine veneer woods to create the pattern structure. The studio uses customised laser machines to cut each piece, the layers are all treated and assembled by hand in a complex collaging process that requires skilled artisanship.

To highlight key areas within the geometric patterning, dyed veneers and inlay banding were applied by hand using marquetry and collaging techniques.

3D printed connection systems are hidden within the layered wood so that they appear floating above the mirror piece. The mirror sections are made from polished steel.
