Our research for this series of sculptures centred on the rhythm, balance and geometry inherent in biomorphic patterning, specifically Islimi (biomorphic arabesque). This rich and complex ornament language is endlessly fascinating, with a deeply multicultural history and a profound, universal appeal.
We combined custom computational geometry software, 3d printing and laser cutting with more traditional drawing and hand building techniques to create intricate vases made from paper.
A purpose-built graphical user interface allows us to sketch the fundamental shape of the sculptures interactively in real time by manipulating three-dimensional bezier curves. The faces of the volumic object are then algorithmically unfolded into a two-dimensional template onto which detailed hand drawn ornament can be layered. Another piece of custom software then precisely stretches and distorts these drawings so that they can be curved and laminated over a three-dimensional form after having been cut from flat sheets of paper.
Each paper layer is cut individually using a customised laser machine. A form is computed and 3d-printed to act as a precision guide so that the lasercut papers can be glued/laminated together by hand to create each face.
The final build is carried out entirely by hand, requiring skill, time, and a deep understanding of the material.
