transcandō volume [twelvefold tilings]

Much of our practice centers on discovery, the excitement of finding and developing new techniques within my craft domain through an endless process of evolving, prototyping and iterating. I am interested in unusual approaches to technologies, techniques and materials, exploring how combining and contrasting these approaches can lead to unexpected and fascinating results.

This work is a culmination of that process. We intersected and juxtaposed ideas about ornamentation, handcraftsmanship, algorithmic thinking and mathematical concepts. The piece sitting at the edge of what I was capable of making, involving hundreds of hours of labour, a thrill of achievement when finally completed.

The primary pattern is based on a niche mathematical concept within geometry and substitution tiling, which were reinterpreted through hand drawn elements.

Computational geometry algorithms were used to calculate precise application of detailed patterns onto three-dimensional form. Sheet molding concepts, typically used in industrial applications, were applied in miniature scale using papers.

Each layer is laser cut individually and then hand finished and gilded with 24ct gold. The sheet parts are then glued together by hand in a complex collaging technique to form each unique face. The faces are then assembled and attached together using textile fasteners within the piece.
