We began working with veneer woods in 2020 and the work continues to evolve in fascinating directions.

The 8-point star is one of the earliest geometric pattern design elements used in Islamic design and can be traced as far back as the 9th century. We felt drawn to the beautiful simplicity of this pattern and the possibilities of creating a visually intricate piece by using a familiar and recognisable motif in non-traditional ways.

The scale and angle of each layer are mathematically determined so that the inherent planar periodicity of the pattern would extend across the piece. An algorithmic python script was developed to compute not only the sizing of the layers but also how they would assemble.

Each section of the piece is made up of numerous individually laser cut parts carefully partitioned to layer and assemble as a seamless work, accented with dozens of nacre inlay pieces. The final build can take hundreds of hours, requiring a high level of precision and attention to detail.

Recently we began working on new sculptural forms using familiar motifs recognisable from antique Persian carpets.

Each of the flat layers that make up these pieces feature specific patterning that is precisely calculated and distorted in such a way that it all fits together exactly into a flowing three-dimensional shape when assembled.
