They predominantly use materials such as archival paper or veneer woods - selected for their delicate, tactile qualities - that are then layered and meshed together using a complex collaging method, with individual projects taking up to 6 months to complete - some works comprising thousands of individual parts.

A specific focus is the creation of visual complexity, either through repetition of simple motifs, elaborate geometric construction, or accumulation of ornamental detail in order to create highly intricate and decorative pieces. Julia and Stéphane are particularly drawn to the possible contrast between visual intricacy and underlying construction principles in pattern language; how complexity can emerge from simple rules, or, conversely, how complex constructions can result in simple, clean visuals.

The build process for pieces involves a back-and-forth between people and machines, playing on their respective strengths. Algorithms are used to augment hand drawn designs, high precision machines are used to laser-cut or 3d print parts. The final build is always carried out entirely by hand.

The studio is a recipient of the Van Cleef & Arpels Middle East Designer Prize for their Symbio Vessel Sculpture series. Over the last few years, the work has been shown at Sharjah Islamic Arts Festival, Art Basel Miami, Art Miami, LA Art Fair, and Jeddah 21,39, and in group shows with galleries including Jonathan LeVine (New Jersey), Heron Arts (California) and Long-Sharp Gallery (Indiana).

Julia is a Jordanian/British dual-national but has lived in the UAE for most of her life. Stéphane is French and moved to the UAE in 2012.

Studio Ibbini is based in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.
