Symbio Vessels

The focus of our vessel collection stems from human and machine collaboration creating works with highly detailed machined precision, but where the trace of human hand is ever-present. The works reference traditional crafts, interpreted within a contemporary aesthetic.

These pieces are created from paper playing with its tactile, delicate qualities; using organic patterning to emphasise the fine detail - pushing the boundaries of the medium and our ability to manipulate it.

The build process for the piece involves both a sequential back-and-forth and an interactive collaboration between humans and machines.

Individual arabesque elements are first hand-drawn, then refined using digital design tools. The three-dimensional profile of the final object is created using custom interactive parametric design software. This allows the graphic elements to be algorithmically arranged radially along arcs of varying diameters and opening angles, creating rings that, once stacked, will conform to the desired profile.

Each of the hundreds of computed arcs is laser cut into physical paper or card parts to be assembled and glued entirely by hand, taking up to 200 hours just for the build part on a single vessel.
